SPARTANBURG, SC – Converse College women's soccer team opened home and conference play Monday evening at the Hayden Abney Fulp Field against the Flying Fleet of Erskine College.
The Valkyries jumped out to an early lead when Freudna Mathurin (Jersey City, NJ) drilled in the rebound off a saved shot taken by teammate Lindsay Eller (Spartanburg, SC) in the 31st minute, putting the Valkyries on the board.
Erskine evened things up when Kasi Benskin (Denver, NC) scored in the 49th minute.
Pushing hard to come back late in the second half Freunda Mathurin took a great shot on goal that strayed away from the keeper, sophomore Jana Gentry (Spartanburg, SC) was there to put in the lose ball in the 70th minute to give the Valkyries the 2-1 lead. Converse held off the Flying Fleet until Erskine sophomore Talisa Vire (Port of Spain, Trinidad) evened the score back up in the 81stminute which would hold the game at 2-2 going into overtime.
Only 30 seconds into overtime, Erskine Junior Sam Collier (Columbia, SC) received the ball on the left side and fired a shot from outside of the 18 yard line which found its way in the back of the net to end the game.
The Valkyries take the field again at home on Wednesday September 15th at 7:00PM against Southern Wesleyan College.
