NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Converse University Field Hockey team fell 5-1 to No. 4 Newberry on Wednesday evening at Setzler Field.
With the loss the Valkyries drop to 2-3 overall on the season and 2-1 in South Atlantic Conference action. Meanwhile, Newberry improves to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in South Atlantic Conference play.
Less than three minutes into the opening quarter of action the Wolves had scored their first goal of the contest. The Valkyries defense held strong for the majority of the period but with 50 seconds to go Zoe Barker put the Wolves up 2-0.
The second quarter was a scoreless draw between the two squads as Newberry recorded the lone shot in the period. The Wolves went into the halftime break up 2-0 on the Valkyries.
Through the first five minutes of the third quarter the two teams were evenly matched.
Ashley Shoffner picked up a green card at the 10:35 mark of the period. Newberry took advantage over the shorthanded Valkyries and scored their third goal of the match. The Converse defense withstood a pair of corners down a man to keep the match within striking distance.
In the final minute of the third quarter the Wolves attempted their 12
th corner of the contest. The Valkyries defended the initial corner and then Newberry scored their fourth goal on a putback shot from the top of the circle.
In the final quarter of action, the Valkyries had their first corner opportunity of the game. Converse controlled the ball on their attacking side of the pitch for the majority of the period. With five minutes to go in the game Newberry added their fifth goal of the contest.

Ashley Shoffner for the Valkyries lone goal of the contest. Converse finished with three shots and two shots on goal against the Wolves.
