SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University field hockey team opened up the 2026 season with a 5-0 win over Coker on Wednesday night at Weisiger Stadium.
With the win the Valkyries improve to 1-0 overall on the season and 1-0 in South Atlantic Conference action. Meanwhile, the Cobras drop to 0-2 overall on the season and 0-1 in South Atlantic Conference play. Converse extends their win streak over Coker to 10 straight games dating back to the 2021 season.
The Valkyries came out swinging in the opening quarter as they outshot Coker 6-0 and attempted four corners against the Cobras. Converse was unable to score in the first period so the two teams ended in a stalemate.
In the second quarter, the Valkyries offense came alive as they scored early and often against the Cobras.
Vania Toranzo scored the first goal of the game and the 2026 season. A few moments later Sol Garcia Berro found
Edith Swaan for the second goal of the game. One minute later, Sol Garcia Berro found
Brooke Burgin and the Valkyries led by three. The Valkyries scored their final goal of the period on a corner opportunity,
Ashley Shoffner passed it to
Chelsy Bunse who found Swaan for her second goal of the game.
Following a scoreless third quarter the Valkyries added one more goal in the fourth period.
Carmen Heisterkamp found Swaan who completed the hat trick for the Valkyries. Converse finished with 23 total shots, 13 shots on goal and 14 corners.
