Valkyries Use Five Third Sets to Sweep NGU

TIGERVILLE, S.C. – Despite five singles matches needing a third set, the Converse University men's tennis team secured a 7-0 sweep over division rival North Greenville on Tuesday afternoon at the Vance Tennis Complex in Tigerville.

With the win, the No. 44 Valkyries improve to 10-6 this season and 6-2 in Conference Carolinas action. The Trailblazers fall to 10-9 and 4-4 in conference play.

The Trailblazers won the first doubles match of the day at No. 2 doubles. Freshman James Hardy and junior Manuel Roncero won 6-2 at No. 3 doubles to even the point. Juniors Takuma Furumaki and Ben Hyde-Smith secured the doubles point with a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles.

Sophomore Lucas Walker won 6-1, 6-3 to secure the Valkyries' second point of the match. Roncero followed by winning sets two and three 6-2 after dropping set one 6-3.

Sophomore Mathis Blary secured the match at No. 1 singles. After falling 6-2 in his first set, he won 6-0, 6-4 in his next two sets to secure the point and match for Converse.

After falling in a tiebreaker in his first set, Hardy won 6-1, 6-2 in his next two sets at No. 5 singles. Senior Marty Letessier did likewise at No. 2 singles, falling 6-4 in his first set before winning his next two 6-3.

Furumaki fell 6-2 in his first set at No. 4 singles before winning 6-4, 6-0 to round out the match.

Next Up For Converse:
The Valkyries return to action on Friday, April 10, as they take on the Emmanuel University Lions in Franklin Springs, Georgia. The match is set to begin at 2:15 P.M.
