Valkyries Extend Win Streak to Five Matches With Two Weekend Victories

FRANKLIN SPRINGS & ROME, Ga. – The Converse University men's tennis team extended their win streak to five matches by defeating the Emmanuel Lions 6-1 on Friday and the Shorter Hawks 5-2 on Saturday.

With the wins, Converse improves to 12-6 overall and 8-2 in conference play.

Match One: Converse 6, Emmanuel 1

After falling at No. 2 doubles, the Valkyries bounced back to secure the point. Freshman James Hardy and junior Manuel Roncero won 6-3 at No. 3 doubles to make the top flight the decisive court. Juniors Takuma Furumaki and Ben Hyde-Smith won 6-4 to secure the match.

Sophomore Lucas Walker won 6-4 in consecutive sets to secure his match at No. 3 singles. Sophomore Mathis Blary bounced back after a first-set loss to take his second two sets 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 singles.

Furumaki secured the win with a 6-3 victory in consecutive sets at No. 4 singles. Letessier won 6-2, 7-6 at No. 2 singles, taking the second-set tiebreaker 7-4.

Roncero rounded out the match with a 2-6, 7-6, 1-0 victory at No. 6 singles. He won his second-set tiebreaker 9-7 and his third-set super-set 10-5.

Match Two: Converse 5, Shorter 2

Furumaki and Hyde-Smith continued their winning ways with a 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles.

Letessier secured a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles. Walker cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles. Furumaki won by retirement at No. 3 singles.

Hardy won his first set 6-3 at No. 4 singles before falling by the same score in set two. He secured the 10-4 super-set victory to win the match. Roncero won Converse's final point with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles.

Next Up For Converse:
The Valkyries are back in action on Wednesday, April 15, as they head to Banner Elk, North Carolina, to take on the Lees-McRae Bobcats. The match is set to begin at 2 P.M.
