Valkyries Conquer Cobras

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University lacrosse team defeated Coker 20-10 on Wednesday evening at Weisiger Stadium.  

With the win the Valkyries have now won two straight games and they improve to 6-8 overall. Meanwhile, Coker drops to 4-8 overall on the season, this concludes the Valkyries non-conference portion of their schedule. Tonight's 20-goal performance was a new season high in scoring for the Valkyries lacrosse team.

Hailey Obenchain and Zoey Jacobs led the offense with five goals each, while Becky Reinhard added a quartet of goals in the victory. Karter Lauer added a pair of goals, while Maia Marquez, Ally Benken, Megan Holleran and Kaitlyn Oliver all scored one goal. Jacobs led the team with a trio of assists, while Obenchain, Lauer and Holleran both contributed a pair of assists each in the win. Brooklyn Walker and Ainsley Cua also added an assist each against the Cobras.

Obenchain also led the team with six caused turnovers, while Alyssa Corder and Kayla Gooden each forced a pair of turnovers. Reinhard finished with a team high five groundballs, while both Cua and Holleran finished with three groundballs each. Abigail Skee led the team with four saves on the night.

Coker wasted little time and scored a pair of goals in the first two minutes of the game. Hailey Obenchain and the Valkyries offense responded with five straight goals. Obenchain recorded a hat trick within three minutes, while Jacobs and Reinhard each added a goal before the seven minutes mark of the opening period. Coker scored with 4:32 to go in the quarter to breakup the Valkyries scoring run. Before the quarter ended, Maia Marquez and Ally Benken both scored for the Converse offense.

Coker once again opened the second quarter with two straight goals, cutting the Valkyries advantage to 7-5 with 8:21 to play in the half. Jacobs, Reinhard and Lauer all scored to give Converse an 11-5 edge over the Cobras with 4:22 to go in the second period. Both teams scored two more goals before the second quarter horn sounded. A last second goal by Obenchain gave the Valkyries an 13-7 lead heading into the halftime break.

In the third quarter the Valkyries defense held strong after giving up a pair of early goals to the Cobras. Converse outscored Coker 4-2 in the third period and in the fourth quarter, Converse outscored Coker 3-1.

The Converse lacrosse team will hit the road this weekend with a trip up to Ferrum, Va.
