Valkyries Use Extra Innings to Push Past King in Game One of Tuesday Doubleheader

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Converse University softball team stopped a nine-game skid on Tuesday afternoon by topping the King University Tornado 11-7 in eight innings in game one of the teams' doubleheader. King won game two 8-0 in five innings.

With the split, the Valkyries move to 10-32 overall and 6-14 in Conference Carolinas play. King is now 23-19 overall and 9-7 in conference play.

Sophomore Olivia Jones and senior Kiarra Thomas led the Valkyries with three RBIs each. Jones scored twice and Thomas scored once. Freshman Gracee Stucki picked up her seventh win of the season for her four innings of relief work in game one.

Game One: Converse 11, King 7 (8 Inn.)

Jones drove in the game's first run as she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the first inning. Freshman Alexis Felker drove in two more on the next at-bat with a single up the middle. Senior Karlie Gibson, pinch hitting in the first inning, singled through the left side to drive in the Valkyries' fourth and final run of the inning.

After a quiet second inning, Converse plated two more runs as Jones notched a one-out, two-run home run.

King scored one run in the fourth and two in the fifth to cut the lead to 6-3.

After a scoreless sixth inning, King plated three runs to even the game 6-6.

After the Valkyries loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth inning, Gibson plated another run with an RBI single into center field. Freshman Tyler Karabach drove in another with a single of her own. The Valkyries plated three more runs on an error by the Tornado's centerfielder.

King plated one run in the bottom of the inning, but it wasn't enough as Converse won 11-7.

Game Two: King 8, Converse 0 (5 Inn.)

Karabach picked up the Valkyries' first hit with a one-out triple to right field, but the Valkyries were unable to capitalize on the opportunity.

Sophomore Addie Branen singled to lead off the second inning, and the Valkyries went on to load the bases with one out, but again were unable to plate a run. King scored twice in the bottom of the inning. They added another run in the bottom of the third.

After Jones walked to lead off the fourth, Felker doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Again, Converse was unable to plate the runs.

King scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to win via the run rule 8-0.
