Valkyries Roll to Pair of 6-1 Divisional Victories

SPARTANBURG, S.C. & BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Converse University men's tennis team cruised to a pair of 6-1 victories over divisional opponents this weekend, defeating Lees-McRae Friday at home and King Saturday on the road.

With the wins, Converse improves to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in Conference Carolinas action. The Bobcats are now 4-2 overall and 1-3 in conference play. King is 5-10 overall and 0-5 in conference play.

Match One: No. 41 Converse 6, Lees-McRae 1

Friday's action began with the Valkyries sweeping doubles play. Senior Marty Letessier and junior Ben Hyde-Smith won 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. Junior Takuma Furumaki and freshman James Hardy won by the same score at No. 2 doubles. Sophomores Lucas Walker and Mathis Blary won 6-2 at No. 3 doubles to secure the sweep.

Four of the five Valkyries who won their singles match did so in just two sets. Walker won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Furumaki won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Hardy won with a double bagel, winning 6-0 in consecutive sets. And Hyde-Smith won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.

Junior Manuel Roncero, playing at No. 3 singles, was the lone Valkyrie to win in three sets, securing a 7-2 win in a tiebreaker in the first set before falling 6-4 in set two. He won a superset in set three, 10-3.

Match Two: No. 41 Converse 6, King 1

Letessier and Hyde-Smith again won at No. 1 doubles, securing a 6-2 victory. Furumaki and Hardy again captured No. 2 doubles, winning 7-5 to secure the point for Converse.

Again, four of the five Valkyries who won their singles match did so in just two sets. Roncero, playing again at No. 3 singles, won 6-3, 6-2. Furumaki won 6-4 in consecutive sets at No. 4 singles. Hardy secured an easy 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles. Hyde-Smith rounded things out at No. 6 singles with a 6-1, 6-4 victory.

Letessier, playing at No. 2 singles, won 7-6 in his first set before falling 6-4 in his second set. He cruised to a 6-1 victory in set three to secure the point.

Next Up For Converse:
The Valkyries return to action on Tuesday, March 24, as they host the Ouachita Baptist University Tigers at the Rose. The match is set for 3 P.M.
