SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University men's basketball team fell 81-73 to Chowan on Monday evening inside the Weisiger Center.
With the loss the Valkyries fall to 9-15 overall and 7-12 in Conference Carolinas action, while Chowan improves to 15-12 overall and 13-6 in Conference Carolinas play.
Jordyn Surratt (Spartanburg, S.C.) led the team with 19 points,
Tre Locklear (Boiling Springs, S.C.) added 18 points and
Camden Edmonds (King, N.C.) contributed 15 points. With his 19-points tonight, Surratt has now scored 470 points on the season, which ranks second all-time in program history.
Converse won the opening tip-off but neither side was able to score for the first 90 seconds of the game. Chowan got on the board first with a three-pointer at the 18:44 mark of the first period.
Latavian Lawrence (Aiken, S.C.) scored the first basket for the Valkyries and jump started an 11-0 run by the Valkyries offense.
With 16:20 to go in the first half, Chowan recorded a three-pointer to end the Valkyries run. Lawrence scored once again for the Valkyries and Converse held a 13-6 advantage going into the first media timeout of the game. Coming out of the timeout break the Hawks scored seven straight points to tie the match at 13.
With 11:49 to play in the first period, Edmonds knocked down a three-pointer to give Converse an 18-16 advantage over Chowan. The lead was short lived, however, as the Hawks went on a 10-0 run take a 26-18 lead against the Valkyries. A few moments later and the Valkyries found themselves down by 18 points following another Chowan run.
Converse was able to fight their way back and trailed 45-35 going into the halftime break. The Valkyries shot 44 percent from the field, 25 percent from three-point range and 85 percent from the free throw line.
Coming out of the halftime break, Chowan scored the first two baskets of the period to build a 14-point advantage. Surratt scored the first four points of the half for Converse to pull the Valkyries back within striking distance of the Hawks. The Valkyries offense continued to click as they used a 10-0 run to tie the game at 49.
The two teams went back-and-forth for much of the half, but eventually the Hawks pulled away and held a 10-point lead with 3:45 to play in the game. Converse was able to pull within four points on two different occasions but they were unable to close the gap down the stretch. Chowan converted on their free throw attempts and came away with an 81-73 victory.
