SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University men's basketball team defeated Young Harris 83-74 on Wednesday night inside the Weisiger Center.
With the win the Valkyries conclude the season with a record of 10-15 overall and 8-12 in Conference Carolinas action. Meanwhile, Young Harris falls to 20-8 overall and 16-4 in Conference Carolinas play.
Five total Valkyries ended the night scoring in double figures,
Jordyn Surratt led the way with 20-points,
Latavian Lawrence finished second on the team with 19 points,
Camden Edmonds contributed 15-points,
Tre Locklear added 12 points and
Finley Pruever had 10 points on the evening.
Converse won the opening tip-off and Lawrence scored the first points of the game with a layup attempt. Carl Cleveland made a three-pointer at the other end of the court for Young Harris. The two teams went back-and-forth through the first few minutes of game action, and they were tied at nine with 15:14 to play in the half.
A few minutes later the Valkyries trailed 15-12 to Young Harris, Surratt and Locklear hit back-to-back three pointers to give Converse the lead with 10:24 to play in the half. Throughout the remainder of the first half the Valkyries held between and a five and eight point lead over Young Harris.
The Mountain Lions closed the gap right before halftime and Converse held a 37-36 advantage going into the break. Converse shot 48 percent from the field, 46 percent from three-point range and 75 percent from the free throw line.
Just like the start of the first half, Lawrence began the period with a driving layup. The Valkyries scored the first six points of the second half, taking a 43-36 advantage over Young Harris with 18:36 to play in the game.
With 15:40 to go in the second half, Surratt found Pruever for the open three-pointer. Pruever's basket gave the Valkyries a 50-38 edge against the Mountain Lions. Over the next few minutes of game time the Mountain Lions began to chip away at the Valkyries lead. Following a 14-6 run by Young Harris, Converse clung to a 56-52 lead with just 10:14 to play in the game.
A few possessions later, Lawrence and Locklear hit back-to-back three pointers and the Valkyries held a 10-point lead once again. Over the next few minutes of game time the Valkyries built their lead to 14-points on two different occasions against the Mountain Lions. Converse was able to maintain their double-digit advantage until the final basket of the game.
Converse outscored Young Harris 46-38 in the second half, shooting 46 percent from the field, 41 percent from three-point range and 85 percent from the free throw line.
