Valkyries Come Up Just Short Against Flying Fleet

SPARTANBURG, S.C.  – The Converse University women's tennis team squared off with one of the two teams tied atop the Conference Carolinas preseason poll, the Erskine Flying Fleet, Friday afternoon at the Rose. The Flying Fleet won the match 4-3 over the Valkyries.

Erskine improved to 3-3 on the season while Converse fell to 1-4. The match was contested as a nonconference match and does not affect the teams' positions in the league's standings.

Senior Lais Martins and sophomore Romy Rueff won the Valkyries' lone doubles match with a 6-2 victory at No. 3 doubles.

Martins followed with a 6-4, 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles to draw the match even 1-1. The Flying Fleet won at No. 2 singles to take a lead once again.

Senior Khushi Kharb won 6-4 in consecutive sets at No. 1 singles to draw the match even once again.

The Fleet secured the match by winning at Nos. 2 and 6 singles.

Sophomore Tamanna Panwar took set one 6-0, then fell 6-3 in set two before winning a 11-9 tiebreaker to bring the match to its 4-3 conclusion.

Next Up For Converse:
The Valkyries are back on the courts as they host Lincoln Memorial on Tuesday, Feb. 24. The match is set to begin at 3 P.M.
