ROME, Ga. –  A third-quarter surge from the Shorter Hawks proved to be the difference as the Converse University women's basketball team fell 82-59 on Wednesday night at the Winthrop-King Centre on the campus of Shorter University.

With the loss, Converse falls to 4-21 on the season and 3-14 in Conference Carolinas action. The Hawks improve to 14-11 and 12-6 in conference action.

Junior Tatiana Brown led the Valkyries with 15 points.

How It Happened
Converse opened the game with a basket from Brown before Shorter raced out to a 7-2 lead. The Valkyries brought the game even at 7-7 with 6:43 remaining in the quarter before a 10-8 run from Shorter put the game at 17-15 heading into the second quarter.

The Valkyries opened with the first four points of the second quarter and held the lead for just over three minutes until the Hawks tied the game once again at 19-19 with 5:28 remaining in the half and then 21-21 just over a minute later. The lead changed hands three times over the next two and a half minutes before Shorter settled in and held onto the lead. The Hawks led by five points, 34-29, at halftime.

A nearly-five-and-a-half-minute dry spell from the Valkyries allowed the Hawks to go up by 15 with just over three and a half minutes remaining in the third quarter. They added five more points to the lead and led 57-37 heading into the fourth quarter.

Converse had their highest-scoring quarter of the night in the fourth quarter, but were still outscored 25-22 and fell 82-59.

Inside the Box Score

• Brown led the Valkyries with 15 points.
• Senior Mazie Helpman also posted a double-digit scoring effort with 14 points.
• Helpman also led the Valkyries in rebounds with five.
• In total, 11 different Valkyries recorded a rebound in the game.
