Valkyries Stumble Against UNC Pembroke

PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Converse University men's basketball team fell 88-68 to UNC Pembroke on Monday afternoon inside the English E. Jones Center.
 
With the loss, Converse falls to 6-9 overall and 4-6 in Conference Carolinas action. Meanwhile, UNC Pembroke improves to 11-6 overall and 8-1 in Conference Carolinas play. Converse has lost three straight road games, their longest road losing streak since November when they lost to Emmanuel, Augusta and Georgia College.
 
UNC Pembroke opened the game on a 9-0 run, Jordyn Surratt (Spartanburg, S.C.) got the Valkyries on the board with a pair of free throws at the 15:51 mark of the first half. Will Fowler (Duncan, S.C.) scored the layup for the Valkyries with 14:24 to play in the opening period. Midway through the opening half, UNC Pembroke had built a 25-8 advantage against the Valkyries.
 
The Valkyries began to chip away at the lead and with 6:39 to play in the half, Surratt made a layup to get the Valkyries back within nine points (28-19). The Valkyries never got closer in the first half as they went into the intermission break down 45-26. Converse shot 35 percent from the field, 16 percent from three-point range and 57 percent from the free throw line.
 
Coming out of the halftime break, Fowler scored first on a layup in the paint for the Valkyries. Converse went on a bit of a run in the early moments of the second half, Surratt scored seven straight points and Finley Pruever knocked down a fastbreak three to keep the Valkyries in striking distance down 53-40.
 
Converse was never able to break the double-digit lead held by the Braves. With 8:15 to play in the contest UNC Pembroke held their largest lead of the game at 70-43. The second half score was a little bit closer as the Braves outscored Converse 43-42. Converse shot 48 percent from the field, 60 percent from the free throw line and 85 percent from the free throw line.
