SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University men's basketball team fell 76-67 to North Greenville on Thursday evening inside the Weisiger Center.
With the loss Converse drops to 6-10 overall on the season and 4-7 in Conference Carolinas. North Greenville improves to 11-8 overall and 6-5 in Conference Carolinas play. Four Valkyries finished the game scoring at least 10-points,
Will Fowler led the team with 25 points, Cam Edmonds added 15-points,
Tre Locklear contributed 11 points and
Jordyn Surratt scored 10 point in the loss. Surratt also recorded a double-double with a 10 rebound effort to lead the Valkyries.
Converse won the opening tip-off, but both teams missed their first few shots of the contest. With 18:20 to play in the first half, Fowler found Surratt for a three-pointer giving Converse the first points of the contest. One missed North Greenville layup later and the Valkyries held a 5-0 advantage following a Fowler floating jumper against the Trailblazers. Converse went into the first media timeout with a 9-6 edge over North Greenville.
The Trailblazers stayed within striking distance of Converse, with 9:16 to play in the first half North Greenville took their first lead of the contest at 15-14. The Valkyries answered at the other end of the floor making in 17-15. The two teams went back-and-forth the rest of the period but it was North Greenville who went into the halftime break with a 28-22 lead over the Valkyries.
Coming out of the halftime break, Edmonds hit a three-pointer to pull the Valkyries within a possession of North Greenville. The Trailblazers used a 20-6 run to distance themselves from Converse midway through the second half. A made layup by Fowler with 10:51 to go in the game ended the Valkyries scoring drought. The Valkyries were unable to overcome the double-digit deficit and they were handed their tenth loss of the season.
