Valkyries Wreck Warriors

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University lacrosse team defeated Southern Wesleyan 22-3 on Saturday afternoon at Weisiger Stadium.
 
With today's win the Valkyries improve to 2-6 overall on the season and 1-0 in Conference Carolinas action. The team's 34 points on Saturday afternoon are tied for the eighth most in program history. Southern Wesleyan drops to 1-8 overall on the season and 0-3 in Conference Carolinas play this year.
 
The Valkyries started the scoring early and often on Saturday afternoon, freshman Brooklyn Walker scored her first career goal in the 12th minute of the first quarter. Junior Hailey Obenchain picked up the assist on the opening goal and then scored the next two for the Valkyries offense. Holding a 3-0 advantage, Southern Wesleyan scored a pair of goals at the 5:17 and 1:09 marks of the opening quarter. Converse went into the second quarter with a 3-2 advantage.
 
In the second quarter the Valkyries offense came to life as they outscored Southern Wesleyan 11-0 in the period. Obenchain, Karter Lauer, Gencie Coan, Megan Holleran, and Izzy Eby all scored in the period. While, Walker, Coan, Holleran and Brooke Bartlett all picked up assists in the one sided quarter.
 
Coming out of the halftime break, the Valkyries continued to apply the pressure to the Warriors. Coan scored the first goal of the period, followed by Corynn Psychoghios. Southern Wesleyan got on the board with a woman up goal at the four minute mark of the period. The Warriors goal ended up being their final goal of the contest. Hailey Obenchain and Zoey Jacobs scored in the final minutes of the period to give Converse an 18-3 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
 
Obenchain scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter and Lauer picked up her fifth of the afternoon. Freshman Kaitlyn Oliver scored her first career goal with 4:38 to play in the contest to end the scoring for Converse.
 
Gencie Coan led the team with a nine point performance, as the junior recorded four goals and five assists on the afternoon. Obenchain finished second on the team with seven total points and led the team with a six goal performance against Southern Wesleyan. Lauer finished third on the team with five total points and finished second on the team with a five goal outing against the Warriors. Megan Holleran finished with two goals and two assists, to finish with four points on the day. Walker finished with a trio of points on the afternoon, while Psychoghios, Jacobs, Oliver and Eby each picked up a goal in the win. Bartlett and Jacobs both finished with one assist each in the win.
