Valkyries Send Off Seniors With a Win Over Shorter

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In a game that featured almost more cards than goals, the Converse University lacrosse team defeated Shorter 18-12 on Saturday afternoon at Weisiger Stadium.
 
With the win the Valkyries improve to 3-7 overall and 2-1 in Conference Carolinas action this season. Meanwhile, Shorter drops to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in Conference Carolinas play on the year. A total of 30 goals were scored in the game on Saturday afternoon and a total of 25 cards were handed out as well between the two teams.
 
Gencie Coan and Hailey Obenchain both led the team with nine point performances. Coan finished with a time high five goals and finished second on the team with four assists, while Obenchain led the team with five assists and finished tied for second on the team with four goals. Zoey Jacobs posted a five point game with a pair of goals and a trio of assists on the afternoon. Becky Reinhard finished second on the team with four goals, Corynn Psychoghios added a pair of goals, while Karter Lauer scored and assisted on a goal to round out the scoring for the Valkyries.
 
Shorter opened up the game with a woman up goal in the first minute of the game. The Valkyries countered as Obenchain and Reinhard connected on their first goal of the afternoon. Shorter scored back-to-back goals against the Valkyries defense to take a 3-1 advantage over Converse. Obenchain scored an unassisted goal in the final few minutes of the period to keep the Valkyries within striking distance of the Hawks.
 
Jacobs, Obenchain and Psychoghios scored the first three goals of the second quarter to give Converse a 5-3 advantage. Shorter once again countered with a pair of goals to tie the match up at five all. The Valkyries outscored the Hawks 5-2 the rest of the period to go into the locker room up 10-7 over Shorter.
 
Converse opened up the third period by scoring five straight goals against the Hawks. Shorter countered with a three goal spurt, but it wasn't enough as the Valkyries went into the final period up 16-11. Only three total goals were scored in the final period as the Valkyries sent the senior class off with a win on Senior Day.
