Softball Splits With Mars Hill on Thursday

MARS HILL, N.C.  – In their final nonconference doubleheader of the season, the Converse University softball team (10-16, 2-2 Conference Carolinas) split with the Mars Hill Lions (14-16, 4-6 South Atlantic Conference) Thursday afternoon at Ponder Field on the campus on Mars Hill University. The Valkyries won game one 8-6 but fell 10-8 in game two.

Senior pitcher Riley Lingerfelt received the decision in both games. She threw 5.2 innings in game one allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits. She struck out three batters. Freshman pitcher CJ McBride earned her first save in the game with 1.1 innings pitched. She allowed one run on two hits and struck out a quartet of Lions.

After 5.0 innings pitched in game two, McBride exited in line for no decision. She struck out one batter while allowing just three earned runs.

Game One: Converse 8, Mars Hill 6

It wasn't until the third inning that the Valkyries opened the scoring when senior Sydney Watson opened the scoring with a one-out, two-run home run.

Mars Hill tied the game with a two-run home run of their own in the fourth inning and took the lead with an unearned run scored on a would-be inning-ending ground ball.

Back-to-back RBI singles in the top of the fifth put Converse ahead 4-3 before Converse added two more on a play that should have ended the inning if not for a throwing error by the Lions' shortstop.

Back-to-back home runs from Mars Hill put them down one run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Sophomore Ava Wells notched an RBI single up the middle in the top of the seventh. Two batters later, fellow sophomore Kiarra Thomas posted an RBI on a fielder's choice.

The Lions scored one run in the bottom of the seventh, but the Valkyries held on to win 8-6.

Game Two: Mars Hill 10, Converse 8

The Valkyries jumped out to an early 3-0 lead as junior Aubree Leonard hit a lead-off home run in the first inning and sophomore Madison Davis hit a two-run home run in the second inning. Mars Hill tied the game in the bottom of the second inning.

A two-out RBI single from Mars Hill in the third inning put them up one run 4-3.

Another run wouldn't be scored by either team until Converse scored five in the top of the fifth. After a lead-off walk, Watson hit her second home run of the day to put Converse back in the lead 5-4. Senior AJ Albano brought home a run with a sacrifice bunt and another run came home on a double steal attempt. The Valkyries fifth run of the fifth inning scored as Thomas hit a one-out single into center field.

Mars Hill scored six runs over the next two innings and won the game 10-8.

On deck for the Valkyries:

Converse returns to the diamond tomorrow, March 21 as they host the North Greenville Trailblazers at Tyger River Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1 P.M.
