Valkyries Top Cavaliers in Sunday Matchup

JOHNSON CITY, TENN.  – The Converse softball team (3-9) got back in the win column with a 5-2 victory over the UVA Wise Cavaliers in game two of their east-Tennessee Sunday doubleheader. They fell to Tusculum 10-2 earlier in the day.

Freshman pitcher CJ McBride received the loss in game one. Senior ace Riley Lingerfelt pitched all 7 innings in game two. She gave up 2 runs, both earned, on 7 hits. She struckout 7 batters.

Game One: Tusculum 10, Converse 2 (6 Innings)

The Pioneers opened with a five-spot in the bottom of the first inning and added another in the bottom of the second.

Sophomore Karlie Gibson opened the Valkyries' scoring with an RBI double in the top of the third inning. Tusculum responded with one run in both the bottom of the third and fourth.

Junior Aubree Leonard drove in Converse's second run in the top of the sixth inning with a double, cutting the Pioneers' lead to 8-2. In the bottom of the sixth, Tusculum plated two runs, putting them up eight runs and enacting the run rule.

Game Two: Converse 5, UVA Wise 2

UVA Wise opened the game with one run in the top of the first inning as Lingerfelt left the bases loaded.

Graduate student Megan Monk tied the game in the bottom of the second with a two-out RBI single up the middle, drawing the game even once again.

It wasn't until the fifth inning when another run was scored. Freshman Charley Swartzel came around to score after a fielding error from the Cavaliers' right fielder. Fellow freshman Olivia Jones knocked in a two-out RBI double, putting Converse up 3-1.

UVA Wise plated their second run of the game in the top of the sixth, which the Valkyries responded to with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth inning. Swartzel hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly. The Valkyries' second run of the inning came on a wild pitch.

After a leadoff single in the top of the seventh, Lingerfelt retired the next three batters in order, including two strikeouts, to secure the 5-2 victory for Converse.

On deck for the Valkyries:

The Valkyries return to the friendly confines of Tyger River Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 15 as they host the Tusculum Pioneers for a doubleheader. First pitch on the 15th is scheduled for 1 P.M.
