Valkyries Drop Downtown Matchups to Division I Terriers

SPARTANBURG, S.C.  – In a pair of downtown Spartanburg exhibition matches, the Converse University tennis teams (both 1-2) fell to the Division I Wofford Terriers Saturday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center on the campus of Wofford College.

Converse, who counted the match as an exhibition on both sides and thus will not count against their record, remain 1-2 on the season. The Wofford men, who won 4-0, improved to 3-3 on the year and the Wofford women, who won 7-0,  improved to 3-0 on the season.

Women's Notes:

The Valkyries claimed just one game during the doubles point with juniors Khushi Kharb and Lais Martins taking one game at No. 1 doubles.

Converse was unable to claim more than two games in a set in singles play. Kharb, playing a No. 1 singles, and Martins, playing at No. 3 singles, each claimed two games during one of their two sets and a single game in another set.

Wofford won 7-0.

Men's Notes:

Wofford took No. 1 doubles 6-2. Junior Marty Letessier and freshman Lucas Walker narrowly fell 6-4 securing the Terriers the doubles point. Sophomores Manuel Roncero and Ben Hyde-Smith trailed 5-4 when their match was suspended.

The Terriers took Nos. 1, 2 and 3 singles to secure the match. Once the match was won, the singles matches on courts 4, 5 and 6 were left unfinished. Junior Stanley Waters led his second set at No. 5 singles when the Terriers clinched the match 4-0.

Next Up For Converse:
The Converse men return to the courts on Wednesday, Feb. 12 as they host the Lander Bearcats at the Sally Abney Rose Complex beginning at 2 P.M. Both teams are back on the courts on Saturday, Feb. 15 as they head to Milledgeville, Georgia to take on Georgia College at 2 P.M.
