Valkyries Fall To Lander On The Road

GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Converse lacrosse team lost to Lander 18-11 on Saturday afternoon inside Van Taylor Stadium.
 
With the loss Converse is now 0-2 overall on the season and they are now 0-2 all-time against Lander. Meanwhile, the Bearcats improve to 1-1 on the season.
 
The Valkyries got off to a faster start than they did against Montevallo in the previous week. Izzy Eby connected with Becky Reinhard for the first goal of the game just 35 seconds into the opening period. A minute later and Brooke Kelly had tied the match with a goal of her own, and less than 30 seconds after her initial goal, Kelly found Mickey Burnett for the go-ahead goal against Converse.
 
Hailey Obenchain continued to apply the pressure to the Bearcats in the early moments of the first quarter, as the junior found Reinhard for her second goal of the afternoon. Lander scored the next five goals and held a 6-2 edge with 3:40 to play in the opening period. Gencie Coan ended the run with a goal, and Corynn Psychoghios kept the Valkyries within striking distance as she scored a goal with just 54 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Lander scored with eight seconds to go in the period to give Lander an 8-4 edge going into the second quarter of action.
 
Lander scored first in the second quarter to increase their lead to 9-4 over the Valkyries. Izzy Eby answered back with an unassisted goal to keep Converse within striking distance of the Bearcats. Three straight goals by Lander had the Bearcats holding an 11-5 advantage over Converse with 1:05 to play in the half. Reinhard scored right before the end of the half and the Valkyries went into the locker room down 12-6.
 
Coming out of the halftime break, Obenchain scored her first goal of the afternoon to keep the Valkyries within range of the Bearcats offense. Following a Lander score, Reinhard scored her fourth goal of the afternoon and Converse trailed 13-8. Lander scored back-to-back goals over the next several minutes of game time, before Obenchain scored her second goal of the evening with 2:41 to play in the third quarter. Lander added a late goal and headed into the fourth quarter with a 16-9 advantage over Converse.
 
In the fourth and final quarter of action, each team scored a pair of goals as Lander held on for the win. Reinhard finished the afternoon with her second five goal performance of the season, while Obenchain and Coan each scored a pair of goals in the loss. Obenchain led the team with a trio of assists, while Eby finished second on the team with a pair of assists in the loss. Valkyries goalkeeper Reagan Collins finished the game with 14 saves against the Bearcats.
