SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University lacrosse team lost 18-13 to Young Harris on Wednesday evening in a non-conference matchup at Weisiger Stadium.
With the loss Converse drops to 0-3 overall this season, the last time the Valkyries started the season 0-3 was in 2022. Young Harris improves to 1-1 overall on the season and has now won six straight in the series dating back to 2014.
Hailey Obenchain led the team with an eight assist and nine point effort against the Mountain Lions. This is third time in Obenchain's career she has recorded at least eight assists in a match. Meanwhile,
Becky Reinhard and
Gencie Coan both produced a hat trick to tie for the team lead in scoring on Wednesday evening.
Young Harris scored the first goal of the game less than a minute into the contest. The Mountain Lions followed their first goal with another score a few seconds later to make it a 2-0 deficit for the Valkyries. Obenchain connected with Reinhard and Coan on a pair of goals to the match at 2-2 with 11:19 to play in the opening period. The Mount Lions stayed aggressive and scored another pair of goals just 30 seconds apart to make a 4-2 Young Harris advantage.
The lead was short lived as Obenchain connected with freshman
Zoey Jacobs for her first two career goals. Following a Young Harris goal at the 2:42 mark of the first period, Obenchain and Reinhard connected on their second goal of the period to make it 5-5 going in the second stanza of action.
With 13:10 to play in the half, Obenchain found Coan for the second time in the game and Converse held their first lead of the match at 6-5. Two minutes later Riley Parker tied the match at 6-6, but
Corynn Psychoghios quickly gave Converse the lead back at 7-6. Young Harris countered with a pair of quick goals as they retook the lead over the Valkyries. Obenchain and Reinhard connected once again as the score was tied 8-8 going into the final minute of action before halftime. Brooklyn Kiest scored with 24 seconds left in the half to give Young Harris a 9-8 edge going into the halftime intermission.
Coming out of the halftime break, Riley Parker scored an unassisted goal and Young Harris was back on top 9-8. Converse countered the Mountain Lions goal, with a pair of goals from Eby and Psychoghios which tied the match at 10. Young Harris began to separate themselves in third quarter as they scored four straight goals against the Valkyries defense. Coan ended the run with a goal at the 1:24 mark, making it a three goal game heading into the fourth quarter of action.
Megan Holleran scored on a woman-up goal with 13:46 to play, pulling the Valkyries closer to within striking distance of Young Harris. The Mountain Lions three consecutive goals to put the game out of reach at 17-12. Obenchain scored the final goal of the night for Converse as the Valkyries were outscored 4-2 in the final quarter of action.
