Brown and Cameron Lead Charge as Valkyries Top Trojans

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – With career-highs from sophomore center Tatiana Brown and senior guard Reagan Cameron, the Converse University women's basketball team (6-15, 4-10 Conference Carolinas) defeated the Mount Olive Trojans (3-17, 2-13 Conference Carolinas) by a final score of 63-49 Saturday afternoon at the Weisiger Center.

Brown led Converse in scoring with 20 points. Cameron followed with 17 points. Both Valkyries tallied career highs in the winning effort. Cameron also led all players in steals with four. Graduate guard Jordan Brown led Converse in rebounding with 10, followed by senior guard Zariyah Washington and Tatiana Brown, who each recorded six rebounds.

Neither team was able to get much working offensively in the first quarter. After the Trojans scored their fourth point with 6:43 left to play in the opening quarter, they were unable to score again until almost one minute had elapsed in the second quarter. In the first quarter, the Valkyries held Mount Olive to 16.7% shooting from the field and 0-for-4 shooting from beyond the arc.

Both teams' offenses improved drastically in the second quarter, with the Valkyries upping their field goal efficiency to 41.7% and 50% from beyond the arc. Converse held Mount Olive to 35.3% from the field in the second quarter, but the Trojans went 3-for-8 from three-point range and narrowly outscored the Valkyries 17-15 in the second quarter. With a four-point lead from the first quarter, the Valkyries held on to a two-point, 23-21, lead heading into the locker room.

Mount Olive never gained the lead in the second half. Converse held the Trojans to just under 30% shooting in the third quarter and just over 30% shooting in the fourth quarter. Converse shot 41.7% and 56.3% from the field in the third and fourth quarters respectively.

The Valkyries' largest lead came with just 56 seconds remaining in the game as they were up 16 points on the Trojans. A garbage-time two-point basket with 25 seconds remaining brought the game to its final score of 63-49.

Converse is back on the court on Tuesday, Feb. 11 as they host the North Greenville Trailblazers at the Weisiger Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 P.M.
