Valkyries Complete Season Sweep of North Greenville

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – For the second time this season, the Converse University women's basketball team (7-15, 5-10 Conference Carolinas) defeated the North Greenville Trailblazers (5-17, 5-11 Conference Carolinas). The Valkyries came away with a 61-55 victory over the Trailblazers Tuesday night at the Weisiger Center.

The Trailblazers join the Lees-McRae Bobcats as teams to lose two games to the Valkyries this season. The Valkyries currently sit second in the northwest division.

Senior guard Elisa Solé Sanchez led all players with 18 points. Graduate guard Jordan Brown and sophomore center Tatiana Brown followed as the Valkyries' second and third leading scorers at 14 and 13 points respectively. Solé Sanchez led Converse in rebounding with nine. Jordan Brown posted four steals while Solé Sanchez followed with three.

After a lackluster first quarter from the Valkyries, Converse hit the ground running in the second quarter. The Valkyries and Trailblazers were even through the first five minutes of the second quarter, both netting five points. Following the even five minutes, Converse rattled off seven straight points, cutting the lead to just one point with just under 2:30 to play in the first half. North Greenville rounded out the half with five straight points of their own, giving the Trailblazers a six-point, 27-21, lead heading into the locker room.

The Valkyries once again came out ready to play in the beginning of the third quarter, starting out on a 11-5 run over the first five minutes of the second half, drawing the game even once. Converse added five more points after that before NGU got back on the board. By quarter's end, the Valkyries led by four points, 41-37.

The teams went back and forth until there was 6:19 remaining in the game when Tatiana Brown hit a jump shot, giving the Valkyries the lead that they never gave back. Converse outpaced North Greenville 15-10 over the final stretch of the game with five points each coming from Solé Sanchez and junior guard Alexis Becker. The Valkyries secured the 61-55 divisional victory.

Converse begins a three-game road stint on Saturday, Feb. 15 as they head to Wilson, North Carolina to take on the Barton Bulldogs. They follow that up with a Sunday, Feb. 16 matchup at Chowan. Both games are scheduled to tip off at 2 P.M.
