SPARTANBURG, S.C. – It was another day for the history books as senior ace
Riley Lingerfelt tossed her third career no-hitter as the Converse softball team (2-6) split their midweek doubleheader with Clark Atlanta (1-1). The Valkyries took game one behind Lingerfelt's no-hit, 16-strikeout performance. Converse lost game two 10-1 in five innings.
A trio of outfielders led the Valkyries at the plate in game one as freshman Charley Swartzel and senior Sydney Watson recorded multi-hit games in the victory. Junior Cara Willis and Watson each recorded two-RBI games in game one's win.
Freshman CJ McBride received the loss in game two for 1.1 innings pitched. Five Valkyries combined to pitch in game two.
Game One: Converse 7, Clark Atlanta 0
Converse plated one run in each of the first two innings before exploding for five runs in the fourth inning.
Junior Jaydin Gentile started the fourth-inning scoring off with an RBI single through the left side of the infield. Willis collected her two RBIs later in the inning with a two-out, bases-loaded single to left field. Watson added two more runs to the Valkyries lead on the next at-bat with a double to right field.
Despite needing just one run to seal the run-rule victory, Converse settled for a full seven-inning victory and the third no-hitter in program history, all three of which were tossed by Lingerfelt.
Game Two: Clark Atlanta 10, Converse 1
A two-out single put Clark Atlanta up 2-0 in the first inning, a lead that would prove to be all the would need by game's end.
Converse had two runners on with one out in the bottom of the first inning, but two outs in the next two at-bats sent the Valkyries back to the field empty-handed.
Back-to-back RBI singles in the second inning doubled the Panthers' lead to 4-0. After sophomore Ava Wells drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the second inning, back-to-back singles from the Valkyries plated Well's run. Graduate outfielder Megan Monk secured Converse's only RBI of the game.
Clark Atlanta picked up one run in the third inning and five runs in the fourth inning as they secured a 10-1 victory over Converse.
