Softball Begins Play at Catawba Round Robin With Two Games on Saturday

SALISBURY, N.C.  – The Converse University softball team (4-12) began their two-day stay in Salisbury with two games on day one of the Catawba Round Robin. They fell 11-1 to Frostburg State (1-3) in a neutral site game to open the day and then dropped a 9-8 game to the hosts, Catawba (8-6).

Game One: Frostburg State 11, Converse 1 (5 Innings)

Frostburg State began the game with a five-spot in the first inning and followed with one run in the second inning.

A one-out single in the bottom of the second inning from freshman Addie Branen gave the Valkyries their only run of the game.

The Bobcats put up another five-spot in the fifth inning giving them a 10-run, 11-1, lead. Two Valkyries reached base in the fifth inning, but Converse was unable to score the three runs they needed to keep the game going.

Frostburg State won 11-1 via the run rule in five innings.

Game Two: Catawba 9, Converse 8

Converse struck first as junior Katelynn Tuxbury hit a two-out, bases-loaded single in the top of the first inning.

Catawba took their first lead of the game as they hit a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning.

The Valkyries had their best inning of the day in the top of the third as they plated four runs. Tuxbury started the scoring with a bases-loaded walk. Senior AJ Albano and sophomore Ava Wells hit back-to-back two-out singles to push the Valkyries' lead to 5-2. Catawba scratched back two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Senior Sydney Watson added two more runs to the top of the fourth inning with her second home run of the season.

Catawba scored three runs between the fourth and fifth innings, tying the game 7-7. A wild pitch brought home the go-ahead run for the Valkyries in the top of the sixth inning, but Catawba responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning.

Catawba walked the game off with a no-out RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning.
