SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University lacrosse team lost 9-8 to UVA Wise on Thursday evening inside Weisiger Stadium.
 
With the loss the Valkyries are now 0-5, while UVA Wise improves to 4-0 on the season.
 
The Valkyries got off to a hot start as both Becky Reinhard and Gencie Coan scored to open up the game for Converse. UVA Wise responded with a three goal run to take back the lead over the Valkyries. Corynn Psychoghios scored in the final two minutes of the period to tie the game at three heading into the second quarter.
 
Zoey Jacobs gave Converse a 4-3 edge after she scored in the first few minutes of the second quarter. Once again UVA Wise scored back-to-back goals to steal the lead from Converse late in the second period. Reinhard scored the final goal of the first half as the two teams went into the break tied at five.
 
In the third quarter, UVA Wise scored both goals in the period as they took a 7-5 lead into the final quarter of action. In the fourth period, Hailey Obenchain scored to pull the Valkyries within a goal of UVA Wise. Logen Davis scored for the Cavaliers to put UVA Wise back up by two with six minutes to play in the contest.
 
Gencie Coan scored with 4:37 to play in the game to pull Converse back within a goal of the Cavaliers. Then with 3:08 to in the quarter, Izzy Eby found Hailey Obenchain for the game tying goal. Issie Brown then left the Valkyries stunned as she scored a woman up goal in the final 57 seconds to give UVA Wise a 9-8 advantage. The Valkyries last second attempt to score came up short as time expired.
