Valkyries Tame Lions

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Converse University lacrosse team picked up their first win of the season on Wednesday evening with a 17-13 win over Mars Hill.
 
The Valkyries improve to 1-5 overall on the season, while the Lions of Mars Hill drop to 1-3 on the year. Hailey Obenchain led the team with a five goal and seven point performance against the Lions. Becky Reinhard finished second on the team with a quartet of goals, while Zoey Jacobs led the team with four assists on the evening. Corynn Psychoghios, Izzy Eby and Gencie Coan all finished third on the team with two goals each.
 
Kendall Middleton scored the first goal of the contest to give Mars Hill the early 1-0 advantage. Gencie Coan scored the first goal of the match for the Valkyries and the game was tied with 10:29 to play in the opening period. Mars Hill then scored the next four goals to take a 5-1 advantage over the Valkyries. Hailey Obenchain and Corynn Psychoghios scored in the final minutes of the quarter to keep the Valkyries offense within striking distance.
 
In the second quarter, Becky Reinhard scored the first two goals of the period for Converse and tied the match at five. Back-to-back goals by Mars Hill gave the Lions a two goal advantage with 6:39 to play in the half. Reinhard, Megan Holleran and Obenchain all scored goals in the last six minutes of the half to give Converse an 8-7 advantage going into the halftime break.
 
Gencie Coan and Karter Lauer scored the first two goals out of the break and Converse led 9-7. Addison Hellwig scored to end the Valkyries five goal run. Converse ended the third quarter with goals by Reinhard, Eby and Obenchain.
 
The Lions attempted a ferocious comeback in the fourth quarter as they scored five goals in the period. The Valkyries answered every goal the Lions put up as Converse secured their first win of the season.
