Helpman Extends Career High in Scoring For Third Time This Season Against King

BRISTOL, Tenn. The Converse University women's basketball team dropped their divisional matchup to the King University Tornado by a final score of 82-51 Tuesday afternoon at the Student Center Complex on the campus of King University.

With the loss, Converse falls to 0-10 and 0-5 in Conference Carolinas play. King improves to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in conference action.

Senior Mazie Helpman led all players in scoring with a new career high of 27 points.
 
How It Happened
After King missed a three pointer on the opening possession, Converse opened the scoring with a jumper from Helpman. The teams exchanged ties and then a lead until Converse finally found a groove and took what ended up being the Valkyries' largest lead of the game at 13-7 with three pointer from freshman Madison Fileen with 3:27 remaining in the opening quarter. King cut into the lead by following Fileen's basket with an 8-4 run to close the quarter, giving Converse a 17-15 lead heading into the second quarter.

King opened the second quarter with a two-point basket to tie the game just 13 seconds in the second period and took their final lead of the game on the next possession. King added just three points to their lead through the rest of the first half, taking a 33-28 lead into halftime.

King outpaced the Valkyries 20-12 in the third quarter and 29-11 in the fourth quarter and won 82-51.

  • Helpman set a new personal career-high in scoring for the third time this season with 27 points. She shot 9-23, 39.1 percent, from the field and went 9-10, 90.0 percent, from the charity stripe.
  • The team collectively also shot 90.0 percent from the free throw line.
  • Senior Andrea Gutierrez Ciordia led the Valkyries in rebounds with seven.
  • Junior Rayanna Evans led the Valkyries in assists with four.
  • Helpman and Evans each recorded two steals.

The Valkyries return home on Thursday, Dec. 18, as they host Johnson C. Smith at the Weisiger Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 P.M.
