GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Conference Carolinas office released the Joby Hawn Cup fall standings and Converse University finished third overall in this year's rankings.
The Converse University athletic department finished third overall this fall with an 81.8 percentage. This is the second season in a row that the Valkyries have been ranked in the top-three of the overall standings of the Hawn Cup. Every fall athletic team at Converse competed in postseason competition. Finishing just ahead of the Valkyries in a tie for first place was North Greenville and UNC Pembroke, both tied with an 83.3 percent mark in the standings. Rounding out the overall top-five standings were Lees-McRae and Young Harris.
In the women's only Hawn Cup standings the Valkyries are tied for first with North Greenville. Both teams are sitting with an 85.1 percent rating during the fall semester. The women's cross country team finished runner-up at the Conference Carolinas Championships for the second straight season, while the volleyball team made a return trip to the Conference Carolinas Tournament Semifinals. The women's soccer team advanced to the second round of the Conference tournament this past fall and the field hockey team made it to the first round of their Conference tournament. Rounding out the women's only top-five ranking was Lees-McRae, Francis Marion and UNC Pembroke.
In the men's only Hawn Cup standings the Valkyries are fourth overall with a 76.7 percent rating. The men's cross country team finished fourth at the Conference Carolinas Championship meet, while the men's soccer team made it to the opening round of the Conference Carolinas Tournament. UNC Pembroke ranked first in the men's only Hawn Cup standings, followed by Young Harris, North Greenville and Barton as the fifth best team in the league.
The Hawn Cup is named after H.C. "Joby" Hawn, who in 1962 became the first full-time Commissioner of what was then known as the Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and now Conference Carolinas. Following his retirement from the conference in 1976, Conference Carolinas began awarding the Hawn Cup annually in his honor.
