Women’s Basketball Drops Nonconference Matchup With Elizabeth City State

Box Score ELIZABETH CITY, N.C.  The Converse University women's basketball team dropped their nonconference matchup to the Elizabeth City State University Vikings by a final score of 89-59 on Saturday afternoon.

The Valkyries fall to 0-6 with the loss. Elizabeth City State improves to 1-3 with the victory.

Junior Tatiana Brown led the Valkyries in scoring with 18 points.

How It Happened
Senior Tatiana Brown took the opening possession to the basket to put Converse up early. The Valkyries built that lead up to five points before Elizabeth City State scored their first basket. Senior Andrea Gutierrez Ciordia capped off the opening run with a three pointer, putting Converse up 13-4 with 6:09 remaining in the first quarter.

The Vikings pulled back within one point, 15-14, with 1:44 remaining in the opening quarter, but Converse finished on a 7-5 run to end the opening 10 minutes, holding a three point, 22-19, lead heading into the second quarter.

ECSU got the score back within one point twice before taking their eventual-game-winning lead with 7:12 remaining in the second quarter. Converse struggled to score in the second quarter, putting up just five points while the Vikings scored 20. Despite the struggles offensively, Converse trailed just 12, 39-27, heading into halftime.

ECSU added just four to their lead in the third quarter. The teams each scored eight points through the first five minutes of the second half. Brown and Gutierrez Ciordia each netted four points over the final four minutes of the quarter.

ECSU had an offensive outburst in the final 10 minutes, putting up 30 points, their highest single-quarter total, as the Vikings won 89-59.

  • Brown led the Valkyries in scoring with 18 points. She shot 7-13, 53.8 percent, from the field.
