SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University field hockey team fell 6-1 to Newberry on Sunday afternoon at Weisiger Stadium.
With the loss the Valkyries drop to 7-3 overall and 4-2 in South Atlantic Conference action, while Newberry improves to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play.
The Wolves got on the board first as Parker Keeler found Emma Westbrook for the first goal of the game. The duo picked up their second goal of the match in the second quarter. Newberry outshot Converse 16-2 in the opening half.
However, Converse pulled within a goal of the Wolves after

Delfi Gonzalez for the Valkyries first goal of the contest. Converse went into the halftime break trailing 2-1 to the No. 3 team in the country.
In the third quarter Keeler found Lieke Varenkamp for the Wolves third goal of the contest. In the fourth quarter Westbrook scored two more goals and Keeler assisted on two others. Mia Pancoast scored the final goal of the contest and Zoe Barker assisted on the first goal of the period.
Converse was outshot 26-5 in the contest and 19-4 in shots on goal against Newberry. The Valkyries finished with 13 saves against the Wolves, while Newberry recorded eight more corner attempts than the Valkyries.
