SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University volleyball team swept Barton on Friday night inside the Weisiger Center.
With the win the Valkyries improve to 15-6 overall on the season and 11-3 in Conference Carolinas action. Meanwhile, Barton drops to 5-16 overall and 2-12 in Conference Carolinas play. The Valkyries have now won two straight matches against Conference Carolinas Eastern Division teams and they improve to 8-2 at home on the season.
In the opening set, Converse jumped out to a 12-4 lead over Barton in the early moments of the period. A Bulldog timeout did not slow the Valkyries high powered offense as they extended their lead to 19-11. Converse finished the opening period on a 5-1 run and won the first set by a final score of 25-15.
The Valkyries carried their momentum into the second set, jumping out to a 9-3 advantage over the Bulldogs in the early moments of the stanza. Converse was in complete control of the set, with a 21-9 lead midway through the period, the Valkyries won the second set by a final score of 25-13.
The third set was the most competitive set of the night for Barton. The Bulldogs opened up the period on a 9-6 run over Converse. The Valkyries stayed within striking distance and eventually tied the set at 12. Moments later Barton was back out in front at 15-12, the Valkyries once again caught up and tied the set at 15. Trailing 20-17 late in the third set, the Valkyries came out focused following a timeout break and finished the set on an 8-1 run against the Bulldogs defense.
Converse tallied 62 points, 46 kills, 11 ace, 5 blocks, 38 assists and 62 digs.
Ava Trentman led the team with 12 kills,
Ariel Bryant and
Alayah Robertson both finished second on the team with eight kills each.
Noemia Chiacchio led the team with 15 digs and four aces in the win for Converse.
Trentman also led the team with three blocks on the evening.
Alysha Arroyo led the team with 35 service aces and 11 digs on the evening. Meanwhile,
Landon Garbade finished second on the team with 13 digs on the evening.
Next Up:
Converse will be back in action tomorrow afternoon against Chowan. Senior Day will start prior to the 1:00 p.m. first serve time.
