Valkyries Win Streak Continues With Sweep of Southern Wesleyan

CENTRAL, S.C. – The Converse University volleyball team defeated Southern Wesleyan 3-0 on Wednesday evening inside Historic Tysinger Gymnasium.
 
Converse improves to 9-3 overall and 3-0 in Conference Carolinas action. The Valkyries have now won four straight matches and 12 straight sets. Converse last accomplished this feat during the 2006 volleyball season. Meanwhile, Southern Wesleyan falls to 3-4 overall and 0-1 in Conference Carolinas play.
 
The Valkyries came out ready to play on Wednesday evening, as they raced out to a 5-2 advantage in the opening moments of the first set against Southern Wesleyan. The Warriors fought back and tied the set at six, the two teams then went back-and-forth over the next several points before Converse began to make their second move of the set. The Valkyries used a 9-4 to take a 17-12 advantage over the Warriors late in the opening set.
 
Southern Wesleyan called a timeout to derail the Valkyries momentum and it seemed to work as they fought back within four points of Converse. A few moments later, the Valkyries held a 24-18 edge but the Warriors rallied back and forced Converse to take a timeout leading 24-21. The Valkyries held off a surging Warriors offense as they won the opening set 25-23.
 
In the second set the Valkyries started out 4-0 before Southern Wesleyan countered with their own 4-0 spurt. The set was tied at 10 when Converse made their move with a 7-2 run against the Warriors defense. Holding an 18-15 advantage, the Valkyries closed the set on an 8-2 run to win the set 25-17.
 
Converse exploded offensively in the third set of the night, the Valkyries raced out to a 6-0 run and eventually held a 9-3 lead in the early moments of the set. Southern Wesleyan rallied and eventually tied the set at 12 midway through the period. Converse used a 5-1 run late in the period to give themselves a bit of breathing room with a 20-16 advantage. Southern Wesleyan once again rallied late, but the Valkyries held on to defeat the Warriors 25-22 to pickup the sweep.
 
Converse finished the match with 48 points, 35 kills, 10 aces, 3 blocks, 32 assists, and 58 digs. Noemia Chiacchio finished with a double-double, leading the team with 13 kills and finishing second on the team with 11 digs. Ariel Bryant finished second on the team with seven kills and third on the team with seven digs. Megan Carpenter finished third on the team with four kills.   
 
Bryant also led the team with four service aces, and Alysha Arroyo finished second on the team with a trio of service aces. Arroyo also led the team with 19 assists, while Jayden Johnson finished second on the team with 13 assists. Mackenzie Day led the Valkyries once again with 24 digs on the night.
 
Next Up:
Converse will be back in action this Friday evening against UNC Pembroke inside the Weisiger Center. The Valkyries will serve it up at 7:00 p.m. against the Braves.
