Converse Volleyball Weekend Recap: Valkyries Split With Francis Marion and Young Harris

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University volleyball team went 1-1 this weekend with a loss to Francis Marion on Friday night and win over Young Harris on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Converse volleyball team is now 10-4 overall this season and 4-1 in Conference Carolinas action. The Valkyries 10 wins not only tie the programs win total from a season ago, it is also just the third time since 2015 that the Valkyries have crossed the double-digit mark.
 
Match One: Francis Marion 3, Converse 0
  • In the opening set on Friday night, the Valkyries jumped out to a 6-3 advantage over the Patriots. The Valkyries eventually extended their lead to 16-10 before Francis Marion started to rally.
  • A few points later, the Patriots used a 5-1 rally to pull within a point of Converse at 19-18. Francis Marion used a 7-3 run to put the opening set away against the Valkyries.
  • Following a 25-22 first set loss, the Valkyries and the Patriots were deadlocked in the through the first 20 points of the second set.
  • The Patriots held a 16-12 advantage, before Converse roared back with a 5-0 run. Once again, it was timely run that helped Francis Marion in the second set. The Patriots ended the period on a 9-3 run against the Valkyries.
  • In the third set the Valkyries fell behind early and were on the wrong side of an 11-4 score. Converse eventually trailed 19-7 before finally falling 25-16 in the final set.
  • Converse finished with 44 points, 37 kills, 4 aces, 3 blocks, 36 assists, and 49 digs. Noemia Chiacchio led the team with 10 kills, Megan Carpenter and Ariel Bryant both finished with 5 kills in the loss.
  • Alysha Arroyo led the team with 18 assists and Jayden Johnson contributed 16 assists. Mackenzie Day led the team with 21 digs, while Ariel Bryant finished second on the team with 13 digs.   
     
Match Two: Converse 3, Young Harris 2
  • On Saturday afternoon, the Valkyries put on a show for their fans with a five set thriller against Young Harris.
  • In the opening set, Converse trailed 6-3 before rallying for an 8-7 advantage. The Valkyries used a 9-2 run to take a 12-8 lead over the Mountain Lions.
  • Late in the first set, the Valkyries held an 18-13 advantage over Young Harris. Moments later, Converse held off a late Young Harris rally that brought the Mountain Lions back within a point at 23-22. Converse won the final two points of the set to secure the first set victory.
  • Once again, the Valkyries trailed in the opening moments of the second set. A 4-0 Converse run midway through the set nearly vanquished the Mountain Lions lead at 13-12.
  • Converse fought till the very end of the set and eventually held a 20-19 edge over Young Harris. Similar to the night before, Young Harris closed out the second set on a 6-1 run to tie the match.
  • The five minute break between the second and third set proved to be an important break in the action for the Valkyries. Converse raced out to an 8-6 lead and eventually built it to a 12-8 advantage.
  • A 6-0 run by the Valkyries offense put the third set out of reach for Young Harris, trailing 18-9. Converse went on to win the third set 25-13.
  • In the fourth set, the two squads were deadlocked through the first 20 points and neither one wanted to yield an inch.
  • Young Harris held set point at 24-23, but Megan Carpenter gave the Valkyries life as she tied the set at 24. The Mountain Lions won the last two points of the set and sent the match into a decisive fifth set.
  • Converse opened the fifth set on a 6-1 run, before Young Harris rallied with a 6-1 run to tie the match at seven. Converse continued to fight off late rallies by Young Harris and eventually won the final set by a final score of 15-12.
  • Converse tallied 78 points, 65 kills, 6 aces, 7 blocks, 58 assists, and 84 digs. Megan Carpenter recorded a career high 16 kills, Ariel Bryant posted a double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs, while Noemia Chiacchio finished with 12 kills in the win.
  • Alysha Arroyo led the team with 32 assists, while Jayden Johnson finished second on the team with 19 assists. Mackenzie Day finished the match with a team high 37 digs.

Converse will hit the road this week with a trio of Conference Carolinas matches away from the Weisiger Center.
