Pilarski Plays Hero as Valkyries Win in Shootout Over Crusaders

BELMONT, N.C. – Converse University freshman forward Sage Pilarski scored the game winner in a shootout against Belmont Abbey on Wednesday evening at Alumni Field, as the Valkyries escaped with a 1-0 victory.
 
Converse improves to 4-1 overall this season and 4-1 in South Atlantic Conference action. The Valkyries win was also the programs first ever win on the grass field at Alumni Field. Meanwhile, Belmont Abbey falls to 0-7 overall this season and 0-5 in South Atlantic Conference play.
 
The Valkyries and the Crusaders played to a stalemate in the opening half of action. Belmont Abbey led the Valkyries 4-1 in shots at the halftime break and 2-1 in corner opportunities. Both teams recorded a save in the half of action.
 
In the second half of action, the Valkyries offense came alive as they outshot Belmont Abbey 5-3 in the second half. Converse also recorded a quartet of penalty corner opportunities in the second half of play. However, both teams were scoreless when time ran out in regulation.
 
During the overtime periods the Crusaders out shot the Valkyries 3-1 and attempted a total of 5 penalty corners during the overtime periods. Still scoreless at the end of overtime the two teams headed to a shootout.
 
Casey Etter started the shootout for the Crusaders with a miss, freshman Amparo Figueroa then missed her attempt for the Valkyries. Cecilia Muller made the first goal of the shootout period for Belmont Abbey, but Isa Van Drie matched Muller with a goal of her own for the Valkyries. Chloe Kiser missed for Belmont Abbey on the next attempt, and Catalina Pistaccio missed for Converse on her attempt.
 
Isabel Stankiewicz made her penalty shot to put the pressure back on the Valkyries. Chelsy Bunse stepped up and matched with a goal of her own. Sarah Schumacher then missed for Belmont Abbey and gave Converse an opening to steal the match away. Freshman Sage Pilarski stepped up and converted on her penalty corner to give the Valkyries the victory.

Next Up:
The Converse Field Hockey team will remain on the road this weekend with a trip to the Empire State to battle D'Youville and Roberts Wesleyan.
