GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Conference Carolinas office announced their weekly Runner of the Week Awards on Monday afternoon, Converse University cross country athletes Ruth Spijker and Luis Rios Brena swept the awards after their performance this past weekend.
 
Converse finished sixth overall in the Converse Kick-Off this past weekend at Milliken Research Park. The Valkyries were the top ranked Conference Carolinas school at the meet and defeated a pair of Division I foes in Presbyterian College and USC Upstate.
 
Spijker finished not only as the Valkyries top runner in the pack but also as the top finisher in Conference Carolinas. The junior finished 17th overall and recorded a 6K time of 22:45.263. Spijker's time is the sixth best 6K time in program history and is just nine seconds off her personal best.
  
Rios Brena finished 17th overall for the Valkyries as he crossed the line first for both Converse and Conference Carolinas programs. Rios Brena's time of 25:47.303 is a new personal best for the Palmetto State native, and it is the second fastest 8K time in program history.
 
The Converse cross country teams are back in action in a few weeks when they travel to Louisville.
