CHARLESTON, WVa. – The Converse University volleyball team went 1-1 on day two of the University of Charleston Invitational.
Converse is now 6-3 overall this season after they defeated Central State on Saturday afternoon. With the win the Valkyries are just four wins away from tying their season total from last season.
Match One: Charleston 3, Converse 1
- The first match of the day was very competitive between Converse and Charleston. Through the first 24 points of the set the two squads were tied at 12.
- A few moments later the Valkyries broke away with a 17-14 advantage and held on as they won the opening set 25-21.
- Converse finished the opening set with 12 kills and a .256 hitting percentage against the Golden Eagles.
- In the second set the two teams continued to match each other point-for-point in the early moments of period.
- The Valkyries kept it close at 17-15, but Charleston used a timely 4-0 run to take a 21-15 advantage over Converse.
- Charleston closed out the set on a 4-1 run to win 25-17 over the Valkyries.
- In the third set, Converse was in complete control racing out to an 8-1 lead over Charleston. The Golden Eagles countered with a 6-1 run to pull within a point of the Valkyries midway through the set.
- Charleston used another 6-0 run to take a 15-13 advantage over Converse in the third set. The Golden Eagles used an 8-1 run to finish off the third period with a final score of 25-19.
- In the fourth set, Converse once again took the early advantage at 15-10, before the Golden Eagles countered with an 8-1 run.
- It remained close the rest of the set but Charleston edged out the Valkyries in the final moments to take the fourth set 25-21.
- Converse finished with 56 points, 48 kills, 1 ace, 7 blocks, 44 assists, and 78 digs. Noemia Chiacchio recorded a double-double with a 14 kill, 16 dig performance against the Golden Eagles.
- Megan Carpenter finished second on the team with 12 kills and Ariel Bryant finished third on the team with 9 kills. Alysha Arroyo led the team with 27 assists and Jayden Johnson finished with 13 assists.
- Mackenzie Day and Ariel Bryant both tied for the team lead with 18 digs each.
Match Two: Converse 3, Central State 0
- In the second match of the day the Valkyries controlled the match from start to finish. In the opening set the Valkyries raced out to an 8-1 advantage over Central State.
- Converse used an 11-0 run to take a 24-8 edge over Central State. The Valkyries went on to win the set 25-10.
- In the second stanza, Converse raced out to a 7-3 advantage over Central State. Moments later, the Valkyries used and 8-0 run to take a 19-6 lead. Converse finished the set on a 6-1 run against Central State.
- The second set was the Valkyries best offensive set, recording 14 kills and a .565 hitting percentage.
- In the final set of the match, Converse raced out to a 9-3 lead over Central State. Converse once again used several key runs to maintain their lead in the match.
- The Valkyries ended the match on a 7-1 run to take the third set and the win over Central State.
- Converse finished with 57 points, 38 kills, 15 aces, 4 blocks, 34 assists, and 33 digs.
- Megan Carpenter led the team with 10 kills, Ariel Bryant was second on the team with 8 kills, and Tori Barr was third on the team with 6 kills. Alysha Arroyo led the team with 15 assists, and Jayden Johnson finished second on the tea with 10 assists on the evening. Mackenzie Day led the Valkyries with 9 digs.

Converse will be home this coming Tuesday evening as they take on Carolina University at 7:00 p.m.
