SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University volleyball team defeated Carolina University 3-0 on Tuesday inside the Weisiger Center.
Converse stays at 6-3 overall on the season, but handed Carolina their first loss of the season in the process. The Valkyries will hit the road this weekend to begin Conference Carolinas play against Chowan and Barton.
In the opening set the Valkyries raced out to a 9-3 advantage before Carolina called a timeout to stop the run. Converse eventually extended their lead to 17-6, and went on to win 25-16 in the opening set. As a team the Valkyries recorded 16 kills and hit .517 from the field in the opening stanza.
In the second set the two teams were even through the first 14 points of period. Carolina used a 4-0 run to take an 11-7 lead over the Valkyries. Converse hung around and tied the match at 16, then finished the match on an 8-2 run to win the second set. The Valkyries won the second set 25-20 and finished with 10 kills in the stanza.
In the third set the two squads were once again gridlocked at seven through the first 14 points of the set. Carolina once again made the first move and took a 14-10 lead against the Valkyries. Converse rallied with an 8-1 run and regained the lead at 18-15. The Valkyries held on and won the final set 25-22 to complete the sweep.
Converse tallied 59 points, 42 kills, 11 aces, 6 blocks, 37 assists, and 41 digs.
Noemia Chiacchio led the team with 12 kills,
Megan Carpenter and
Ariel Bryant finished second on the team with 8 kills each. Chiacchio also led the team with 4 aces and
Landon Garbade finished second on the team with 3 aces.
Alysha Arroyo led the team with 25 assists, while
Mackenzie Day had a team best 11 digs against Carolina.

Converse will hit the road this weekend with matches at both Chowan and Barton.
