Valkyries Slam The Door on The Abbey

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University Field Hockey team held off a late Crusader rally to defeat Belmont Abbey by a final score of 2-1.

Converse is now 2-0 overall on the season and 2-0 in South Atlantic Conference action. It is the first time since 2022 that the Valkyries have started the season with back-to-back victories. Belmont Abbey falls to 0-3 overall on the season and 0-1 in SAC play this season.

The Valkyries were the aggressive team early as they attempted multiple corners against the Crusaders defense. With just four minutes to go in the opening frame of action, Sage Pilarski passed the ball in to Edith Swaan on a corner play. Pilarski then deflected Swaan's shot into the goal for the Valkyries first goal of the game.

Converse stood strong the remainder of the half and thwarted a trio of corner attempts in the second period. The Valkyries went into the halftime break holding onto a 1-0 lead over the Crusaders.

In the third period of action the Valkyries offense came back alive as they attempted five total shots and a quartet of corners. Midway through the period Catalina Pistaccio took it upon herself to split the Crusaders defense and score the Valkyries second goal of the night.

For Valkyrie fans the fourth quarter was one of the most stressful periods of the night. Belmont Abbey attempted numerous shots against the Valkyries defense and attempted a total of six corners in the stanza.

With just two minutes remaining in the game, McKinley Soto found Isabel Stankiewicz for the Crusaders first goal of the evening. In the final 90 seconds of the contest, the Valkyries played keep away and ran out the clock against the Crusaders.

Pilarski scored her first collegiate goal in tonight's game, while Swaan recorded her first career point. Pitstaccio will have to wait another game to join the elusive 100-point club, the senior now sits at 96 points after tonight's goal.
