SPARTANBURG, S.C.  – Opening the match with victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles wasn't enough for the Converse University women's tennis team (5-10, 0-4 Conference Carolinas) in their match against the Young Harris Mountain Lions (9-8, 3-2 Conference Carolinas) as the visiting conference newcomers took the match 4-3.

Graduate student Tonya Glogowski-Watson and sophomore Lais Martins took a 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles to kick off the match. Senior Natalie White and sophomore Khushi Kharb followed that up with a 7-5 victory at No. 2 singles, winning the doubles point for the Valkyries.

Kharb kicked off singles play with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles, giving Converse a 2-0 lead.

The Mountain Lions followed with three consecutive singles victories, meaning Converse had to win both of the on-going singles matches to take the match.

Glogowski-Watson did her part at No. 1 singles, winning her first set 7-6 and the tiebreaker 7-5. After narrowly falling 7-5 in the second set, she again needed all 13 games to defeat her opponent in the third set. She rolled to a 7-0 tiebreaker victory.

With the match coming down to No. 5 singles, Martins battled back after falling in her first set to force a match-deciding third set. Although she fought to the end, her opponent from Young Harris won the final set 6-4.

The Valkyries return to the courts on Monday, April 8 as they will make up their Conference Carolinas matchup with the King Tornado beginning at 10 A.M. in Bristol, Tennessee.
