Softball Rounds Out Regular Season in Banner Elk

BANNER ELK, N.C.  – For the second time this season, the Converse University softball team (17-37, 6-18 Conference Carolinas) squared off with the Lees-McRae Bobcats (18-22, 13-11 Conference Carolinas). Lees-McRae took game one of the doubleheader 3-2 and won game two 12-7.

Junior Riley Lingerfelt threw a six-inning complete game in game one. She allowed just one earned run while striking out 11 batters.

Game One: Lees-McRae 3, Converse 2

The Bobcats got the scoring started with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning.

Freshman Kiarra Thomas evened the game with one out in the top of the fourth inning.

Lees-McRae took their second and final lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-out, two-run home run.

Junior Sydney Watson cut the lead in half with a solo shot to lead off the top of the seventh inning. Two Valkyries reached base later in the inning with two outs, but were left on base, one in scoring position, as the game ended 3-2 in favor of the Bobcats.

Game Two: Lees-McRae 12, Converse 5

Senior Madeline Modica brought home the first run of the game with an RBI single in the first inning and followed that with a stolen base.

Lees-McRae plated four runs on back-to-back-to-back at-bats, including back-to-back home runs.

Thomas hit her second solo home run of the day in the top of the third inning. The Bobcats responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning.

Sophomore Ariya Deans knocked an RBI single in the top of the fourth and Watson followed with a three-run home run, cutting the lead to three runs, 9-6. Lees-McRae plated two in the bottom of the inning and added another in the bottom of the fifth.

Watson scored the Valkyries' final run of the season with a solo shot in the sixth inning.

With the release of the final Conference Carolinas KPI standings on Saturday evening, the Valkyries' season has come to a close. The tenth edition of the Converse softball team will take the field in February 2025.
