PERFECTION! Lingerfelt Tosses First Perfect Game In School History; Valkyries Sweep Friday Doubleheader

SPARTANBURG, S.C.  – For the second time in two days, junior Riley Lingerfelt tossed a complete-game victory for the Valkyries. Once again etching her name into the record books, she posted the first no-hitter and perfect game in program history. She struck out 13 of the 15 batters she faced, breaking her own school record set Wednesday against St. Andrews.

Sophomore Victoria Dichio also collected a win for her start in the circle in game two. Lingerfelt posted a three-inning save in game two. The Valkyries combined for 28 hits across the two games. Senior Emily Ingle, junior Sydney Watson and sophomore Ayellad Howard each posted a three-hit game during the Friday-night doubleheader.

Game One: Converse 9, Shaw 0 (5 Inn.)

After opening the game with a four-run top of the first, Lingerfelt struck out the side in the bottom of the opening frame, the first of several times she would do so.

The Valkyries offense returned to form in the top of the third, scoring one run. Lingerfelt also returned to her strikeout form in the bottom half of the inning, sitting the Bears down in order.

Converse posted two runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings. Lingerfelt again struck out the side in the bottom of the fourth. In the bottom of the fifth, sophomore shortstop Karleigh Crabill snagged a screaming line drive, saving the perfect game.

Lingerfelt struckout the next two batters to secure the first perfect game in Converse history and the Valkyries added a 9-0 victory to their resume.

Game Two: Converse 11, Lincoln (Pa.) 1 (6 Inn.)

Once again the away team, Converse opened the game with six runs in the top of the first inning, setting the tone early.

Dichio helped her own cause when she knocked an RBI single in the top of the second inning.

The Lions scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the third with a solo home run.

The Valkyries got the run back in the next half inning when Watson doubled into right field, scoring sophomore AJ Albano who reached on an error to open the inning.

A sacrifice fly and two two-out hits pushed across three runs for the Valkyries, putting the game into run-rule territory.

As she did in game one, Lingerfelt shutdown her opponents in the final inning, securing the victory for Converse.

On deck for the Valkyries:

The Valkyries have a much-needed break following Friday night's excitement. They return to the diamond on Thursday, Feb. 22 as they head to Greeneville, Tennessee to take on the Tusculum Pioneers in a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2 P.M.
