Eby and Reinhard Showout in Home Debut, Obenchain Ties Career Assists Record

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Converse University freshmen Izzy Eby and Becky Reinhard combined for 13 goals on Thursday night, as the Valkyries defeated Catawba College 20-17 at Weisiger Stadium.

With the win Converse improves to 1-1 on the season and break a two game losing streak to Catawba. Thursday nights win is also the first win over the Indians since the 2014 season. Meanwhile, Catawba drops to 0-3 on the year, with all three losses coming against Conference Carolina schools.

With 8:52 to play in the opening quarter, Hailey Obenchian found Becky Reinhard for the first goal of the game. About two minutes later, Abby Shuren tied the match at one on an unassisted goal. The Indians then scored back-to-back goals a few minutes later to take a 3-1 advantage over Converse. Megan Holleran found Reinhard for her second goal of the night and ended the Catawba scoring run. With just 56 seconds left in the first period, Helena Cronemiller scored the fourth goal of the quarter for Catawba.

Trailing, 4-2 at the start of the second quarter the Valkyries offense came to life against the Indians defense. Judy Rose scored the first goal of the period for Catawba, but Karly Driscoll scored back-to-back goals for Converse and helped jump start the offense. Reinhard and Eby then scored on consecutive possessions and the Valkyries found themselves on top once more at 6-5.
Gencie Coan and Obenchain also got in on the scoring action in the second stanza. When it was all said and done, the Valkyries took an 11-7 advantage into the halftime intermission.

In the third quarter, Caroline Cox got the scoring started for Catawba. Then Eby answered with back-to-back goals, while Reinhard and Holleran answered with goals of their own to end the third period of action.

Leading 15-10 going into the final quarter of action the Valkyries looked poised for their first win of the season. Joey Baillie scored the first goal of the period for Catawba, but afterwards, Reinahrd, Eby and Coan answered with three consecutive goals. Despite the large lead the Valkyries saw their advantage dwindle after Catawba scored four unanswered goals. Obenchain put the game away with her second goal of the game and gave Converse a 20-16 lead. Abby Shuren scored the final goal of the game for either side with a goal in the final 47 seconds of the contest.

Reinhard became the sixth player in program history to score at least seven goals in a contest. Meanwhile, Obenchain recorded her 53rd career assist, tying her with Laura Starkes (2014-17) for the most all-time in program history.
