Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cary Catches Fire Late; Valkyries Push Past Pioneers

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Making just her sixth start in three seasons, junior forward Anna Cary drilled three fourth-quarter three pointers to help the Converse University women's basketball team (2-6, 0-2 Conference Carolinas) push past the Spartanburg Methodist Pioneers (2-7) 64-43 in the teams' first-ever official meeting.

Cary's nine points, a career high for the Prosperity native, did not, however, lead Converse as three Valkyries all scored in double-digits. Junior Tatiana Brown led the team with 13 points followed by senior Elisa Solé Sanchez who netted the Valkyries 11 points. Graduate student Jordan Brown rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points.

Jordan Brown also led all players with 15 rebounds. She also recorded five steals, the most of any player in the game. Senior Amaia Parkins tallied the second-most rebounds of any player on either team with 11. Parkins posted five blocked shots, two more than Spartanburg Methodist's entire team.

Spartanburg Methodist kept the game close in the first half. Converse outscored the Pioneers 12-11 in the first quarter. Both teams tallied 18 points in the second quarter to bring the halftime score to 30-29 in favor of Converse.

Converse pulled away in the third quarter as they held Spartanburg Methodist to just two two-point field goals and no free throws, giving up just four points to the Pioneers in the period. The Valkyries added 13 to their total in the third quarter.

Spartanburg Methodist never gained the lead in the second half and Converse secured the 64-43 victory over the Pioneers.

With final exam season in full swing at Converse, the Valkyries will not have a midweek contest in the upcoming week. They are back on the court on Saturday, Dec. 14 as they host the Lees-McRae Bobcats for a Northwest Divisional matchup at the Weisiger Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 P.M.
