Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Double-Digit Victory Starts Converse in W Column to Open Division Play

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – For the first time this season, the Converse University women's basketball team (3-6, 1-2 Conference Carolinas) led coast-to-coast as they defeated the Lees-McRae Bobcats (3-6, 1-4 Conference Carolinas) by a final score of 63-52 Saturday afternoon at the Weisiger Center.

Converse extends its win streak to two games by downing their divisional foe.

Senior guard Elisa Solé Sanchez led the team in scoring with 15 points. She also recorded five rebounds and four assists. Graduate guard Jordan Brown was the team's second-leading scorer with 14 points and was tied for the team lead in rebounds with eight. Senior forward Amaia Parkins also recorded eight rebounds. Graduate guard Alisa Davenport also recorded double-digit scoring with 13 points.

The Valkyries started the game hot, carrying the momentum from Saturday's victory over Spartanburg Methodist as they shot 42.86% from the field in the opening 10 minutes against the Bobcats. Converse tallied 17 points in the first quarter and were just as dominant on defense as they held Lees-McRae to just two field goals in the opening quarter. The Bobcats managed just seven points as the game entered the second quarter.

While the Valkyries' offense cooled off just a tad in the second quarter, they still shot over 30% from the field and 85% from the line. Lees-McRae narrowly outscored Converse in the second quarter, cutting just one point into the once nine-point lead. The Valkyries took a 31-23 lead into halftime.

The Valkyries outpaced the Bobcats by three points in the third quarter, again shooting 42.86% from the field. The game was the same song and dance in the fourth quarter as the teams went point-for-point in the final 10 minutes. And with that even quarter, Converse secured their third double-digit win of the season 63-52.

The Valkyries will return to the court twice before heading home for the winter holidays. They first host Francis Marion on Tuesday, Dec. 17. Then Converse welcomes nonconference-foe Coker to the Weisiger Center on Saturday, Dec. 21. Both games tipoff at 2 P.M.
