Washington Leads Valkyries in Scoring in Nonconference Matchup Against Augusta

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Facing the No. 9 ranked team in the southeast region proved too much for the Converse University women's basketball team (1-6, 0-2 Conference Carolinas) as the Augusta Jaguars (5-2) of the Peach Belt outpaced the Valkyries late in the game. The Jaguars won 56-45 Wednesday night at the Weisiger Center.

Senior Zariyah Washington led the Valkyries in scoring with 15 points. Junior Bentlee Chockley led the team in rebounding with eight boards followed by a trio of Valkyries with four rebounds each.

The Valkyries' starters accounted for 30 of the team's 45 points. Junior Tatiana Brown led the Valkyries off the bench with six points.

Converse's best shooting quarter came in the opening 10 minutes when they went 5-for-11 from the field for a 45.45 shooting percentage. The Valkyries outpaced the Jaguars 16-13 in the first quarter, the only quarter in which they outscored Augusta.

Despite only "winning" one quarter, Converse held the lead for 19 minutes and 54 seconds of game time, 49.8% of the game's total length. They twice led and the score was tied on four separate occasions.

The Valkyries are back on the court on Saturday, Dec. 7, as they host the Spartanburg Methodist Pioneers at the Weisiger Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 P.M.
