Valkyries March Past Centurions In Season Opener

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University men's basketball team put on a show for the home crowd on Monday night, as they defeated Carolina Christian University 104-51 inside the Weisiger Center.
 
For the third time in four years the Valkyries men's basketball team will start the season 1-0. It was the first time since 2021 that Valkyries began the season inside the friendly confines of the Weisiger Center. Carolina Christian on the other hand falls to 0-7 overall on the season.
 
For the fifth time in program history the Valkyries crossed the 100-point threshold against an opponent. Converse is 5-0 all-time when scoring 100-points in a game. Davion McAdam led the team with 21-points off the bench, Sigurd Lorange finished second on the team with 18-points, and Kervens Yacinthe finished third on the team with 14-points.

First Half Notes:
  • AJ Rouse scored the first points of the contest for either team with 19:21to play in the opening half.
  • Antwon Corbin scored moments later and Carolina Christian held a 5-0 lead over the Valkyries.
  • Kervens Yacinthe scored the first points of the game for Converse at 17:38 mark of the first half. A few seconds later, Jaylen Golston found the back of the net and the Valkyries within a single point of the Centurions.
  • At the 16:18 mark of the first half, McAdam connected on his first three of the game and tied the match at seven. Less than a minute later, Sigurd Lorange knocked down a three-pointer and the Valkyries never trailed again the rest of the game.
  • Holding a 19-11 advantage at the 11:13 mark in the half, Kyle Monk stole the ball and slammed it over a Centurion player for a 10-point lead.
  • Over the next several minutes of game time, the Valkyries offense was clicking on all cylinders. Converse used a 27-5 run to take the momentum and a 46-16 advantage over Carolina Christian.
  • At the end of the first half the Valkyries led 52-23, shooting 51 percent from the field, 40 percent from three-point range and 75 percent from the free throw line.
Second Half Notes:
  • Converse opened the second half on a 9-0 run against the Centurions.
  • With 15:02 to play in the game Jaylen Golston made a fast break layup and the Valkyries held a 72-28 advantage over the Centurions.
  • The Valkyries kept up the pressure throughout the second half and with six minutes ot go in the contest, Cam Jenkins made his first appearance for Converse. Jenkins nailed both of his shot attempts and the Valkyries led 90-42.
  • Moments later, McAdams recorded back-to-back three pointers and the Valkyries held a 100-46 advantage over Carolina Christian.
  • Converse outscored Carolina Christian 52-28 in the second half, the Valkyries shot 61 percent from the field, 46 percent from the three-point and 100 percent from the free throw line.
