SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University men's basketball team fell 91-83 to Georgia College on Saturday evening inside the Weisiger Center.
The Valkyries drop to 1-1 on the season, while Georgia College improves to 1-3 on the year. It's just the second time in program history the Valkyries have started the season with a 1-1 record. It was also just the fourth time in program history the Valkyries had allowed 90 or more points inside the Weisiger Center.
Caleb Reams led the team with a 21-points, 7-rebounds, and 4-assists effort against the Bobcats.
Kervens Yacinthe finished second on the team with 12-points, and
Jaylen Golston finished third on the team with 10-points.
Leo Da Campo led the team with 10-rebounds in the loss for the Valkyries.
First Half Notes:
- Ian Davis knocked down a three-pointer to get the scoring going for either side at the 18:46 mark of the first half.
- Sigurd Lorange scored the first basket for the Valkyries with 18:02 to play in the half.
- Georgia College jumped out to a 10-4 lead and forced the Valkyries to call the early timeout. Moments later the Bobcats held a 16-6 lead with 13:29 to go in the first period.
- Converse began to chip away at the Bobcats lead, with 10:24 to play in the half, Yacinthe and Ben Jones hit back-to-back three pointers to cut the Bobcats lead to 21-18.
- Moments later, Isac Ahnstrand had an individual five point spurt and tied the game at 25 with 6:27 to play in the half.
- The two teams stayed close with one another the rest of the way down the stretch. The Valkyries went into the halftime break trailing 41-36.
- Converse shot 53 percent from the field, 46 percent from three-point range and 66 percent from the free throw line.
Second Half Notes:
- The Valkyries came out focused in the second half and opened the period on a 10-5 run against the Bobcats.
- The Valkyries defense continued to cause headaches for the Bobcats in the opening 10 minutes of action in the second half. Over that time frame, Converse was able to build a 12-point lead up 64-52.
- Then disaster began to strike for the Valkyries as the Bobcats offense began to click and a barrage of fouls were whistled against them.
- A 12-point Valkyrie lead was erased in less then four minutes, as the Bobcats were awarded 10 free throw attempts.
- The Valkyries began to regroup and refocus and held an 80-78 advantage with 2:32 to play in the game.
- Right when the Valkyries appeared to have momentum in their favor, once again a series of 50-50 calls went in favor of Georgia College.
- The Bobcats made the most of their free throw opportunities down the stretch as they connected on 9-of-12 free throw attempts in the final minute of action. In the final 10-minutes of the contest the Bobcats attempted a total of 24 free throws and cashed in on 16 of them.
- Reams made a pair of free throws with 21 seconds to go in the contest to pull within five points of the Bobcats. Converse ran out of time before they were able to complete the comeback.
- In the second half, the Valkyries shot 43 percent from the field, 18 percent from three-point range, and 64 percent from the free throw line.
