Valkyries’ Incredible Run Ends In Quarterfinals

BELMONT, N.C. – Following the team's first postseason win since the 2015 season, the fifth-seeded Converse University women's soccer team (9-7-3, 6-3-3 Conference Carolinas) dropped their quarterfinal matchup 3-0 against the fourth-seeded Belmont Abbey Crusaders (12-3-3, 7-2-3 Conference Carolinas) Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field on the campus of Belmont Abbey.

Belmont Abbey held an 8-0 advantage in shots in the first half and a 15-4 advantage in the second half. Two of the Valkyries' shots were on goal.

Despite the advantage the Crusaders had in the first half, Converse held the host team scoreless in the first half, aided by two incredible saves from freshman goalkeeper Gabriella Gudeman. The halftime score was 0-0.

Just under 10 minutes into the second half, Belmont Abbey broke open the scoring. They added twice to their lead within the last 10 minutes of the game.

With the loss, the Valkyries' season comes to a close. The team's nine victories are tied for the most in a season since the 2015 Valkyries won 12 games. The Valkyries netted 28 goals this season, the most since the 2016 Converse team netted 36 goals. Gudeman also set the program record for single-season solo shutouts with seven.
