Women’s Basketball Starts Season At SAC/CC Challenge

GAFFNEY, S.C. – Once again tipping off the season against the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters (1-1) and the Limestone Saints (2-0), the Converse University women's basketball (0-2) dropped both games of the SAC/CC Challenge. The Railsplitters and Saints also took on the King University Tornado (1-1) as the other representative of Conference Carolinas at the challenge. All matches were hosted by and played at Limestone University. 

Game One: Lincoln Memorial 69, Converse 52
Junior Bentlee Chockley led the Valkyries in scoring with 14 points. Sophomore Olivia Martin tallied the second-most points in the contest with 12, setting a new career high. Martin led the team in rebounds with six.

The Valkyries shot 63.2% from the charity stripe, an improvement from the Valkyries 58.9% made from the free throw line last season. Chockley led the team in points from the stripe with six made free throws on seven attempts. Senior Zariyah Washington played 37 minutes in the season opening game, up from her team-high average of 33 minutes last season.

Converse had its best quarter of the game in the fourth quarter, tallying 23 points while only giving up 21. The Valkyries went 9-22 from the field, the most field goals made by them in a quarter in the game. They also went 5-6 from the free throw line in the game's final 10 minutes.

Game Two: Limestone 65, Converse 43
Chockley again led the Valkyries in scoring in the second game of the weekend. She posted 10 points against the Saints. The Valkyries sank five shots from beyond the arc.

Graduate student Jordan Brown led the team in rebounding with five boards. In total, nine Valkyries recorded at least two rebounds. Converse also recorded 12 steals, led by graduate student Alisa Davenport with four.

The Valkyries are back on the court on Friday, Nov. 15 as they host Winston-Salem State in their first home game of the year. Tip off is scheduled for 6 P.M. and tickets are still available at https://GoValkyries.com/sports/2021/6/17/ticketing.
